Aldi, the low-priced and no frills supermarket chain, will now accept credit cards, according to a corporate announcement made yesterday.
Previously, Aldi stores only accepted debit cards and cash, trying to keep their costs down by avoiding the interchange fees incurred with credit cards. This latest move may help the chain appeal to a new range of shoppers.
“As ALDI continues to evolve by expanding its product lines and moving into new markets, the way we do business will continue to evolve as well,” said Jason Hart, CEO, ALDI. “We care about being able to make our customers’ shopping experiences simpler and better every time they come to see us; and offering them the convenience of using their credit cards will help us do just that.”
Aldi and Trader Joe’s are both owned by Germany’s Albrecht family. Aldi has nearly 1,500 stores throughout 32 states with plans to expand to 2,000 stores in the next three years.
